- Child Abuse Services Medical Stream (SCAN) is a specialized service that provides medical services to children who have experienced physical / sexual abuse and / or neglect.
The healthcare team offers medical assessment to children who have been, or are at risk for, physical, sexual, or extreme neglect. The services that may be provided include:
- consults
- healthcare team assessment of the child who has been abused
- phone consults with other healthcare providers (regarding abuse or suspected abuse)
- referrals to other healthcare providers or agencies (as needed)
- education to healthcare providers about child abuse
- community child abuse prevention activities (e.g., resource development and distribution)
- a consult with the SCAN team does not fulfill your duty to report. You must still report Child Abuse concerns to Children and Family Services - Child Intervention Intake and response Team (CIRT)
Key Provider: pediatricians, registered nurses (RNs) - Eligibility
- Yes, Inclusion Criteria:
- disclosed vaginal / anal penetration
- disclosed physical abuse, extreme neglect and / discipline-causing injuries
- physical injuries where the doctor has concerns about the reported mechanism for the injury injury
- possible health risks related to the alleged offender’s medical history and / involvement with drugs / unprotected sexual activity with multiple partners
- a suspicion of sexual / physical abuse but the child is developmentally unable to provide a verbal disclosure
- the alleged sexual assault has occurred within 7 days
- past consensual intercourse with a partner that falls within the legal age guidelines
- disclosure is limited to fondling over clothes or sexual touching

- Service Access: Professional Referral Required, Healthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.
Contact the Calgary Sexual Assault Response Team at the Sheldon Chumir Urgent Care if the child / youth is 14 years of age or over. If the child / youth is 13 years of age or younger go to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.
