Compassionate Care Volunteer Program

Service provides:

• companionship - connects a trained volunteer with adults to ease social isolation, improve quality of life, and support greater independence through activities and hobbies, either in the home or in the community with the goal of living life to its fullest in the presence of an illness; some examples include reading, baking, and writing memoirs
• respite - opportunity for personal time and space for caregivers as supporting a loved one as they near death can be difficult emotionally, physically, and socially
• community connections - resource information, as requested, to improve community connections for both clients and caregivers

Volunteers do not provide personal care such as medication management, bathing, dressing, or home cleaning.

• individuals with a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness
• and are somewhere on the palliative care journey (this can include day-of diagnosis to end of life, but priority is placed on those nearing end of life who reside at home in the community, and who have limited support systems in place)

• referrals can be made by anyone including family, health care professionals, friends, neighbours, or social workers
• call or e-mail to book an initial home assessment (this is done to assess client eligibility)

Waitlist varies depending on availability of volunteers.
