Jordan's Principle

Provides funding for First Nations children living in Canada to access products, services and supports they need, when they need them.

Service offers:

  • funding that can help with a wide range of health, social and educational needs, including the unique needs that First Nations Two-Spirit and LGBTQQIA(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex and Asexual) children and youth and those with disabilities may have
  • a Jordan's Principle call centre is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help with requests for products, services and supports

Funding may cover:

  • health supports include mental health services, medical supplies and equipment, mobility aids, dental care and more
  • social supports include social workers, respite care (individual or group), specialized summer camps and more
  • educational supports include school supplies, tutoring services, teaching assistants and more
Yes, Service targeted to:
  • First Nations children
  • 17 or 18 years and younger, depending on the province 
  • who permanently live in Canada (does not matter if the child lives on a reserve, in a city, or a rural area)
  • and meets one of the conditions listed below
One of the following eligibility criteria must be met:
  • are registered or qualify to be registered under the Indian Act 
  • have one parent or guardian who is registered or qualify to be registered under the Indian Act
  • are acknowledged by their nation for the purpose of Jordan's Principle 
A person is considered an adult at age 18 in 6 provinces (Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan) and at age 19 in 4 provinces and the 3 territories (British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, and Yukon).

  • contact Jordan's Principle Alberta Regional Focal Point- Alberta Region Office, or the 24 / 7 call centre to determine if an application is required (if application is required, applicant will be provided forms and assisted in filling them out and submitting them)

Parent or guardian, a child 16 and older, or an authorized representative of child, parent, or guardian can complete the application.

After submitting an application, the following timelines apply:

  • applicants will receive a decision within 48 hours after providing all necessary information depending on the urgency of the application
  • urgent requests are when the child’s health and safety is a concern, will be addressed within 12 hours
  • group requests will be responded to within one week of receiving a complete application, urgent group requests will be addressed within 48 hours


Appeals must be submitted within 1 year from the date the request was rejected. A decision can be expected within 30 days of submitting a request for an appeal.
