Description
Provides funding to ensure that First Nations children in Canada can access necessary products, services, and supports they need, precisely when they need them.

Jordan's Principle offers:

  • funding to ensure that First Nations children in Canada can access the products, services, and supports they need, when they need them

  • funding that can assist with a wide range of health, social, and educational needs that First Nations children and youth may have

Under Jordan's Principle, individuals or families:

  • can be informed about the help available, and how to access it
  • receive assistance with coordinating access to products, services, and supports
  • receive funding when needed to ensure products, services, and supports are accessed without delay

Some examples of initiatives funded under Jordan's Principle include:

  • health supports such as mobility aids, addiction services, assessments and screenings, transportation to appointments, long-term care for children with specialized needs, therapeutic services for individuals or groups, and much more
  • social supports such as social workers, a personal support worker, specialized summer camps, respite care, specialized programs based on cultural beliefs and practices and much more
  • educational supports such as school supplies, tutoring services, teaching assistants, specialized school transportation, psycho-educational assessments, assistive technologies and much more
Eligibility
Yes, Jordan's Principle is targeted at children under 18 who permanently reside in Canada, and meet one of the following criteria:
  • is registered or eligible to be registered under the Indian Act
  • has one guardian who is registered or eligible to be registered under the Indian Act
  • is recognized by their nation for the purposes of Jordan's Principle

  • is ordinarily resident on reserve

Ordinarily resident on reserve means that an Indigenous child:
  • lives on a reserve
  • typically resides on a reserve, even when temporarily away for reasons like receiving healthcare
  • was living on a reserve just before accessing Jordan’s Principle
  • is a dependent of a family that primarily lives on a reserve
  • returns to live on a reserve with guardians during the year, even if they live elsewhere for school or other services

After submitting an application, the following timelines apply:

  • applicants will receive a decision within 48 hours after providing all necessary information depending on the urgency of the application
  • urgent requests are when the child’s health and safety is a concern, will be addressed within 12 hours
  • group requests will be responded to within one week of receiving a complete application, urgent group requests will be addressed within 48 hours

Appeals must be submitted within 1 year from the date the request was rejected. A decision can be expected within 30 days of submitting a request for an appeal.
