Description
Provides First Nations children living in Canada access to products, services and supports they need, when they need them.

Service offers:

  • under Jordan's Principle First Nations children are provided funding that can help with a wide range of health, social and educational needs, including the unique needs that First Nations Two-Spirit and LGBTQQIA children and youth and those with disabilities may have
  • health supports include mental health services, medical supplies and equipment, mobility aids, dental care and more
  • social supports include social workers, respite care (individual or group), specialized summer camps and more
  • educational supports include school supplies, tutoring services, teaching assistants and more
  • Jordan's Principle call centre is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help with requests for products, services and supports

Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to First Nations children under the age of 18 or 19, permanently living in Canada and meeting one of the conditions:
  • are registered or qualify to be registered under the Indian Act 
  • have one parent or guardian who is registered or qualify to be registered under the Indian Act
  • are acknowledged by their nation for the purpose of Jordan's Principle 
  • does not matter if the child resides on a reserve, in a city, or a rural area
A person is considered an adult at age 18 in six provinces (Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Saskatchewan)   A person is considered an adult at age 19 in four provinces and the three territories (British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, and Yukon)

Service Access: Application Required, To access:
  • contact your local Service Coordinator or the (24-7) call centre for assistance, who will help you figure out if you need to submit an application, and if so provide you with copies of the forms, assist in filling them out and submitting the application

Waiting Period: Yes,

After submitting an application, the following timelines apply:

  • applicants will receive a decision within 48 hours after providing all necessary information depending on the urgency of the application
  • urgent requests are when the child’s health and safety is a concern, will be addressed within 12 hours
  • group requests will be responded to within one week of receiving a complete application, urgent group requests will be addressed within 48 hours

 

What happens if request is denied?

  • applicants have the option to appeal a decision within one year from the date the request was rejected 
  • you can expected a decision within 30 days of submitting your request for an appeal
