Description
Provides temporary financial assistance to unemployed Canadians.

Service provides:

  • weekly benefit payment that amounts to a maximum of 55% of an individual's earnings
  • benefit payments for a maximum of 45 weeks
  • benefits for individuals who have been fired without fault
  • benefits for individuals unable to work due to medical conditions
  • benefits for expectant or new mothers, and parents with a new or critically ill child
  • benefits for individuals caring for a terminally ill family member
  • benefits for self-employed individuals
  • benefits for Canadians living abroad
Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to:
  • individuals employed in insurable employment
  • individuals who lost a job through no fault of their own
  • individuals who have been without work and pay for at least 7 consecutive days in the last 52 week
  • individuals who have worked the required number of insurable employment hours in the last 52 weeks or since the start of your last EI claim, whichever is shorter
  • individuals who are ready, willing and capable of working each day
  • individuals who are actively looking for work (you must keep a written record of employers you contact, including when you contacted them)
Application Process
Service Access: Application Required, To access service:
  • visit website to apply for Employment Insurance (EI)
  • visit website to find a Service Canada Centre 
  • sign in to My Service Canada Account (MSCA) to check claim status and messages 
  • visit a Service Canada Centre for assistance 
  • phone the Service Canada call centre for assistance 
To avoid losing benefits, applicants must apply within 4 weeks of their last day of work. The online application for benefits takes 1 hour to complete.

An Employment Insurance (EI) application decision is typically reached within 28 days of the individual filing their application.

If an  Employment Insurance (EI) application is rejected, applicants can request a reconsideration of the decision within 30 days after the decession was communicated to the applicant.
