Death Benefit

Service offers:

• a one-time payment payable to the estate or eligible individuals of a deceased Canada Pension Plan contributor

• the deceased must have paid into the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) for at least one-third of the time they were eligible to contribute, but for no less than 3 years or
• 10 calendar years

• phone Service Canada to request information and assist in completing applications 
• visit website to apply online ( (requires a My Service Canada Account)
• visit website to apply using a paper application 
• include certified true copies of the required documentation
• mail the form or drop it off at a Service Canada office
• include both the deceased person's Social Insurance Number and your own on all documents before sending them to Service Canada

If it has been more than 12 weeks since you applied and you want to check your application status, you can contact the Canada Pension Plan.

It takes approximately 6 to 12 weeks to receive a payment from the date Service Canada receives a completed application.
