Description
Provides a way of making a court application for a protection order that orders one person to have no contact with another person.

Service provides:

  • a way of making a court application for a protection order that orders one person to have no contact with another person

An Emergency Protection Order (EPO):

  • is granted by the court and enforced by the police
  • can prevent a family member from contacting you and other family members
  • can stop a family member from coming to your home, school, work or other places
  • is only granted in situations of family violence; all other situations require a restraining order

An EPO may be granted when:

  • violent or threatening behaviour occurs between family members
  • there is evidence that immediate protection is necessary
  • family violence will resume or continue

You should have no contact with that family member while the protection order is in place.

Application Process
Service Access: Application Required, To access service:
  • it is recommended individuals first contact Legal Aid Alberta’s Emergency Protection Order Program (EPOP) during regular office hours for assistance in applying for an EPO 
  • individuals may also contact their local police or the nearest Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment to request an EPO, and they can apply for you
To apply for an EPO yourself, call your respective Provincial Hearing Office, based on your location:
  • Calgary Hearing Office (for claimants located Wetaskiwin or south)
  • Edmonton Hearing Office (for claimants located north of Wetaskiwin)
