Description
Offers a training program for unemployed immigrants who want to pursue careers in construction project management.

Service provides:

  • a full-time, 6 month construction project management training program available twice yearly to 18 eligible applicants

Includes:

  • 18 weeks in class developing English language workplace communication skills and computer skills
  • 90 hours over 4 months in class at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) completing modules in project management towards the Project Management Professional (PMP) designation
  • 8 weeks in a full-time practicum with an Edmonton employer in the construction industry
  • 1 month of supported job search if required

Goals of the program are:

  • business communication proficiency and understanding of the Canadian construction workplace culture, computers, and social media strategies
  • awareness of the labour market trends and improved ability to conduct a successful job search
  • improved technical skills to effectively initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control, and close out projects
  • a Project Leadership certificate from NAIT and 6 of 12 modules towards the Project Management certificate

Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to permanent residents of Canada or new Canadian citizens residing in Alberta who are:
  • graduates of a degree program from an international institution with significant study and experience in the construction field
  • unemployed or marginally employed
  • with a language proficiency of Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment (CLBA) 6 or higher in all areas (reading, writing, speaking, and listening)
  • and highly motivated and committed to completing the program
