Provides care for adults with serious, life-threatening illnesses.

Provides life support to critically ill adult patients with serious, life-threatening illnesses from a variety of causes, which may include:

  • shock
  • pneumonia
  • trauma
  • transplantation
  • severe surgical illness
  • other serious medical illnesses caused by kidney, liver failure, and diabetes

Equipment is used to monitor patients and provide life support, including:

  • helping the patient to breathe
  • supporting vitals signs with medicine
  • cleaning a person's blood with different types of dialysis

Key Provider: clinical nurse specialists, dietitians, doctors, health educators, healthcare aides, occupational therapists (OTs), religion care workers, pharmacists, physical therapists (PTs), psychologists, registered nurses (RNs), respiratory therapists (RTs), social workers, therapy assistants (TAs)
