Aboriginal Head Start

Service provides:

• culturally relevant traditional teachings for Aboriginal children to prepare them with school-readiness skills to enter mainstream schools on an equal basis with all other children

Includes:

• learning through play
• supporting parents / caregivers as the primary teachers of their children
• engaging parents / caregivers in program participation
• recognizing and supporting extended families in teaching and caring for children
• seeking community Elders' participation and support
• involving community partners and / or cohorts
• helping to build the child's self-esteem and preserve cultural identity, and foster a desire of lifelong learning
• ensuring transparent evaluation and accountability frameworks

Programming topics include:

• culture and language
• education and school readiness
• health and safety promotion
• nutrition (using the Canadian Aboriginal Food Guide)
• social support networking
• parental involvement

• Indigenous children aged 3 to 5 years
• who are First Nations, Inuit, or Metis

Wait lists may occur if program site locations are full.
