Description
Provides temporary emergency accommodation to University of Alberta students experiencing an immediate personal safety risk, facing intolerable living conditions, and / or who are financially destitute.

Service provides:

  • temporary emergency accommodation to University of Alberta students at risk

Includes students who are:

  • experiencing an immediate personal safety risk (emotional, physical, and / or sexual
    harm)
  • facing intolerable living conditions
  • financially destitute

Affiliation: Campus Services (Residence Services), Office of the Dean of Students
Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to registered students of the University of Alberta who are:
  • experiencing an immediate personal safety risk (such as emotional, physical, and / or sexual harm)
  • facing intolerable living conditions
  • financially destitute
  • at a level of risk necessitating emergency shelter
  • not actively suicidal
  • not currently struggling with a compelling mental health issue or psychiatric diagnosis that would likely impair their capacity to function effectively within the provisions available
  • not demonstrating or have not demonstrated behaviours that are not conducive to communal living
  • without access to alternate accommodations or financial resources that would
    allow alternative housing to be secured
Eligibility will be assessed at intake and will be at the discretion of the Safe House Advisor. Transgender individuals welcome. 
Application Process
Service Access: Professional Referral Required, To access service:
  • referral from other university service, Dean, professor, or University of Alberta Protective Services required
  • contact University of Alberta Protective Services to ask to be connected with the on call Residence Services staff
Students cannot refer themselves to the program. Service animals welcome.
