Protection of Sexually Exploited Children

- Description
- Offers supports to children and youth who want to end their involvement in or are considered at risk for becoming involved in sexual exploitation.
Service provides:
- support to children and youth who want to end their involvement in sexual exploitation through the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act
- assistance to children and youth who are considered at risk to become involved in sexual exploitation
- preventative programs across Alberta to reduce the incidence of child sexual exploitation and the forms that this exploitation can take
Intervention may include:
- education
- risk assessment
- appropriate service provision whether in the community or in a confined setting
Sexually exploited children and youth can access a variety of voluntary community services including:
- medical assistance
- drug and alcohol counselling
- psychological services
- educational programming
- placement resources
- life skills support
Children and youth who are considered immediately at risk to engage in sexual exploitation can be apprehended by police or a caseworker delegated under the Child, Youth, and Family Enhancement Act, taken to a protective safe house, and may be confined from 5 to 47 days. During that time, they may receive:
- emergency care
- treatment
- assessment
- development of a long term plan to assist in exiting sexual exploitation
- connections to community support services and placement services if unable to return to the parental home
