Description
Assists families with adoptions or private guardianship and licenses and monitors private adoption agencies in Alberta.

Service provides:

  • adoption information for families who want to provide permanency for a child in permanent care of Alberta Children and Family Services through adoption or private guardianship
  • adoption information for families who want to adopt a child privately within Alberta, through a licensed adoption agency or internationally
  • monitoring and licensing of private adoption agencies in Alberta

Types of permanency services include:

  • government adoption and private guardianship
  • private agency / private direct / step-parent adoption
  • international adoption
Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to:
  • residents of Alberta at the time of application, approval, and placement
  • who are 18 years and older
  • are physically and mentally capable of parenting an adoptive child
  • who have demonstrated financial and domestic stability
An approved SAFE Home Study Report may be required to be considered for placement.

The cost to adopt will vary depending on which type of adoption is pursued:



  • there are no fees for adoptions processed through Alberta Children and Family Services on behalf of children who were in the permanent care of the government

  • private licensed agencies have their own fee schedule; contact each agency to inquire about their fee schedules; a list of approved agencies throughout Alberta is available here

  • international adoptions involve high fees which include travel, translations, completion of home study reports, preparation of documents for out of country, and more; details available online here
