Old Age Security (OAS) pension provides a monthly payment to individuals who are 65 years and older.

Service offers:

  • the Old Age Security (OAS) pension provides a monthly payment to individuals who are 65 years and older
  • Old Age Security pension payments are taxable income
  • employment history is not a factor in determining eligibility for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension
  • Service Canada will automatically enroll for the OAS pension in most cases if sufficient information is available

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is available to:

  • Old Age Security pensioners with low income and is not taxable

The Guaranteed Income Supplement Allowance is a non-taxable payment available to:

  • to an individual whose spouse or common-law partner is eligible to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)
  • households where the combined annual income is below the maximum annual income threshold for the Allowance

The Allowance for the Survivor is a monthly payment available to:

  • individuals whose spouse or common-law partner has died and have not remarried or entered another common-law partnership since
  • individuals whose annual income is below the maximum threshold for the Allowance for the Survivor
Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to Canadian citizens or legal residents:
  • age 65 and older
  • lived in Canada for at least 10 years since the age of 18
Employment history does not impact eligibility for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension. Individuals can receive it regardless of their employment status.
Application Process

  • Service Canada automatically enrolls individuals for the pension when sufficient information is available, and will notify them of enrollment
