- An Alberta Health Services program that works with clinicians and administrators within a specialty to develop standard provincial referral guideline documents, measure and manage transparent wait times, and adopt efficient and effective referral processes. Pathways are used by referring and receiving providers as they are managing referrals.
This program provides the framework for provincial referral pathway development through a data-driven, evidence-based decision making process. Works with clinicians, administrators and patients to:
- identify standard reasons for referral and associated requirements
- define provincial access targets
- improve wait time transparency
- adopt policy-compliant referral and wait time measurement and management processe
After an initial assessment, the Referral Pathways team works with each specialty, scheduling dedicated support in the form of an advisory role, offering:
- an environmental scan to ensure service inclusion
- service specific readiness assessments
- meeting coordination, planning
- data analysis, status evaluation
- referral process advice
- change management advice
