Positron Emission Tomography / Computed Tomography
Alberta Health Services - Provincial Health Services
- Description
- A nuclear imaging test that shows how cells of the body are functioning at the molecular level. With the positron emission tomography (PET), the computed tomography (CT) creates a detailed picture.
The person is given a radioactive substance that collects in certain cells in the body. These cells can then be detected and the PET/CT combined gives a clear picture of the size, shape, and location of the abnormal cells.
