Out of Province Health Coverage

Service offers:

• health coverage for insured physician and hospital services elsewhere in Canada
• reimbursement for clients who had to pay up front for insured physician and hospital services

Hospital services are limited to services insured in Alberta, and only covers those services if they are provided in a publicly funded or general hospital.

Does not cover:

• vision care
• mental health and addiction services
• physiotherapy
• midwifery services
• some cancer services
• home care services
• podiatry and optometry services
• dentistry services except for medically required oral surgery
• food, travel, accommodation, or other costs related to obtaining health services outside Alberta

If the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) doesn't cover a service in Alberta, AHCIP won't cover it outside Alberta. You will only be reimbursed for services insured under the AHCIP.

Wait times vary.

Clients may be required to pay out of pocket when accessing services outside of Alberta, however, insured health services can be reimbursed. Private facilities are not covered.
