Description
Protects the right of every Albertan to be treated fairly in the provision of public services.

Service provides:

  • an impartial body that operates independently from the Alberta government, political parties, and individual elected officials, but reports directly to the Legislative Assembly
  • the protection of Albertans to be treated fairly in the provision of public services
  • recommendations to resolve issues of unfairness and improve administrative processes

Under Alberta's Ombudsman Act, the Ombudsman responds to complaints of unfair treatment by:

  • provincial government authorities
  • municipal governments
  • the patient concerns resolution process of Alberta Health Services (AHS)
  • designated professional organizations under the Health Professions Act, Regulated Accounting Profession Act, Regulated Forestry Profession Act, Veterinary Profession Act, and the Agrology Profession Act

The Ombudsman cannot investigate:

  • federal governments
  • Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs)
  • federal / municipal police forces
  • universities / schools
  • matters handled by the courts and / or private matters
Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to individuals who feel they have been treated unfairly by an administrative action by:
  • Alberta provincial government departments, agencies, boards, and commissions
  • Alberta municipalities
  • designated professional organizations, including health professionals, accounting professions, foresters, and veterinarians
  • the patient concerns resolution process of Alberta Health Services (AHS)
Individuals are required to complete all available appeals prior to applying with Ombudsman. See website for more details.
