Service provides:
- an impartial body that operates independently from the Alberta government, political parties, and individual elected officials, but reports directly to the Legislative Assembly
- the protection of Albertans to be treated fairly in the provision of public services
- recommendations to resolve issues of unfairness and improve administrative processes
Under Alberta's Ombudsman Act, the Ombudsman responds to complaints of unfair treatment by:
- provincial government authorities
- municipal governments
- the patient concerns resolution process of Alberta Health Services (AHS)
- designated professional organizations under the Health Professions Act, Regulated Accounting Profession Act, Regulated Forestry Profession Act, Veterinary Profession Act, and the Agrology Profession Act
The Ombudsman cannot investigate:
- federal governments
- Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs)
- federal / municipal police forces
- universities / schools
- matters handled by the courts and / or private matters
