- Description
- The Pediatric Tone Management Service provides medical care for kids with tight muscles (spasticity) and muscle spasms (dystonia).
The service helps children with tight muscles or muscle spasms due to cerebral palsy, brain injuries, or (neurological) conditions that affect the brain as well as nerves throughout the body and spinal cord. The team helps families to understand how these muscle changes affect comfort, daily activities, and participation.
Treatment options include:
- injections of botulinum toxin type A (drug used for relaxing muscle spasms and tightness)
- therapy using intrathecal baclofen (medicine is sent into the spinal fluid through a pump under the skin)
- selective dorsal rhizotomy (surgery done by cutting certain nerve roots in the spinal cord to release tightness)
- corrective casting (special cast is placed on the leg or arm to allow for proper position of bones and joints to grow over time)
- bracing (to stabilize joints and muscles and improve movement and function
