Surgical referral letters/forms for Orthopedics and Urology are received through the zone specific FAST (Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment) office and sent to surgeon’s offices. For all other surgical specialties, referral letters/forms are sent directly to the surgeon’s office where an appointment is made, and the surgeon books surgery if required.
Waiting Period: Yes,All patients requiring surgery are placed on the Alberta Surgical Waitlist. Wait times for surgery vary amongst specialties and are reflective of both operating room and surgeon availability, as well as individual waitlists. As surgical dates become available, patients currently on the waitlist are assigned a date by their surgeon. Surgeons frequently travel within the zone and operating in multiple healthcare facilities. Wait times may reflect the clients wish to have surgery in a specific local area.
