Description
The Northern Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic (NNFC) assesses high-risk children from intensive care units across Northern Alberta for neurodevelopmental issues (conditions that affect the development of the nervous system). Healthcare experts assess the progress of newborns at risk and offer early help when needed.

Cares for babies from a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), offering:

  • help with developmental issues that could cause disabilities
  • referral to community services, if needed
  • first appointment usually at 6 months adjusted age
  • more appointments, if needed
  • follow-up until toddler or preschool age. If more help is needed later, referral to other Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital program or community program

Key Provider: audiologists, dietitians, physicians, occupational therapists (OTs), nurse practitioners (NPs), physical therapists (PTs), psychologists, registered nurses (RNs), social workers, speech-language pathologists (SLPs)
Eligibility
Yes, Services targeted to:
  • all infants less than 29 weeks gestation
  • all infants with moderate or severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy
  • all infants treated with therapeutic hypothermia
  • all infants with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH).
  • any infant with an acquired brain imaging abnormality diagnosed in the neonatal period andadmitted to NICU for care
  • neonatal meningitis / encephalitis
  • direct physician referrals on a case-by-case basis will be considered
