Description
Provides neurodevelopmental assessment for high risk children from intensive care units across Northern Alberta. Health care professionals monitor the neurodevelopmental progress of newborns at risk and provide early intervention.

Provides care to babies from a neonatal intensive care unit, which includes;

  • early diagnosis and management of developmental problems that can cause disabilities
  • referrals to community services if needed
  • a first appointment (normally at 6 months-adjusted age)
  • other appointments as needed
  • follow-up is offered until your child is 18 months to preschool age. If your child needs further neurodevelopmental follow-up, he or she may be referred to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital or a community program

Key Provider: audiologists, dietitians, doctors, occupational therapists (OTs), nurse practitioners (NPs), physical therapists (PTs), psychologists, registered nurses (RNs), social workers, speech therapists (speech-language pathologists)
Eligibility
Yes,

  • All infants <29 weeks gestation

  • All infants with moderate or severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

  • All infants treated with therapeutic hypothermia

  • All infants with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)

  • Any Infant with an acquired brain imaging abnormality diagnosed in the neonatal period and admitted to NICU for care.

  • Neonatal meningitis/encephalitis

  • Direct physician referrals for neonatal graduates

The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is the largest free-standing, comprehensive tertiary physical rehabilitation hospital in Canada, serving patients of all ages who require complex rehabilitation to enable them to recover from injuries and illnesses and participate in life to the fullest.
