Description
The Driver Evaluation & Training Service (DETS) provides driving assessment, counselling, and training for young adults, adults and seniors who have a wide variety of disabilities or health conditions that may affect their ability to drive.

The Driver Evaluation & Training Service provides:

  • Comprehensive driver evaluation to assess the capacity and ability for safe driving in clients with complex medical and / or functional conditions who cannot be safely assessed by typical driver evaluation services.
  • Recommendations and on-road training with the use of adaptive techniques or equipment if / when appropriate i.e. adapted or custom-modified car, or wheelchair-accessible van.
  • Referrals to specialized rehabilitation services to practice core skills that are required for safe driving.

Additional education for use of vehicle modifications and assistance in choosing adaptations for vehicles.

Eligibility
Yes, Service targeted to clients:
  • 16 years of age and older (must have passed the knowledge test for learners), with a physical, cognitive, perceptual or visual impairment which could potentially impact driving
  • must have an authorization letter / temporary licence from Driver Fitness and Monitoring (Requested by program staff)
  • potential for driving

There is a fee for:



  • both the clinical ($134) and on-road ($160) portions of the assessment

  • $75 fee per session for lessons if they are recommended

  • $25 no show fee with notice under 24 hours


If adaptive aids are recommended, there are fees to purchase and install these items from a certified vendor of your choice.
