Every year on February 11, Canadians come together to recognize 211 Day—a national day dedicated to raising awareness about 211’s role in supporting communities across the country.
What is 211?
211 is a free, confidential service that connects people across Canada to essential community and government resources. With just a call, text, or online chat, individuals can speak with a trained Community Resource Specialist who can help navigate local support services, including:
✔️ Food banks and meal programs
✔️ Financial aid and income assistance
✔️ Mental health and addiction support
✔️ Emergency housing and shelters
✔️ Legal resources
✔️ Support for seniors, newcomers, and more
Why is 211 Essential?
Every year, 211 helps over 2 million Canadians connect with vital services. Many people don’t know where to turn when facing life’s challenges—211 serves as a trusted, easy-to-access navigation service, ensuring individuals find the right support before reaching a crisis.
📊 By the numbers:
- In 2024, 211 Alberta responded to over 108,000 contacts through phone, text, chat, and email.
- Data from 211 Alberta shows that in the first half of 2024, housing and shelter needs made up 27% of unmet service requests, while mental health resources accounted for 11% of unmet needs.
211’s real-time data and insights help decision-makers and community organizations identify gaps in services and invest in resources where they’re needed most.
